“It was half a chance,” reflects Kaizer Chiefs striker Bernard Parker about scoring the match winner to beat Mamelodi Sundowns on the road. “I had to dive to get to the ball earlier than the defender. I went in with full force and it paid off, goal!”
It was the striker’s seventh league goal this season.
Even a day after the match, Parker is still not sure how to express the emotions he felt after having scored the 1-0 in the dying seconds of the game against last season’s league champions. “That moment is unexplainable,” he stresses. “It shows that hard work pays off.”
Chiefs have already won the league title. Thanks to the win, Amakhosi moved to 66 points, which is a record since the league went to 16 clubs for the 2002/2003 season.
“It’s a great feeling to have that record,” reacts Parker. “It means that, as a team, we will be in the Kaizer Chiefs history books. That’s something to achieve as a player. However, the season is not yet finished. There is more to come.”
There are two Absa Premiership matches to go before the season finishes, against Bidvest Wits and Chippa United.
Amakhosi host Wits at the FNB Stadium on Wednesday, 6 May (kick-off at 19:30). This will be Chiefs’ last home game this season.
