Kaizer Chiefs play the second leg of the preliminary stage of the CAF Champions League against Township Rollers in Botswana’s capital Gaborone on 28 February. Many of our supporters are planning to go to the game, so we thought it best to give you as much information as possible to make your trip to attend our game in Botswana as trouble free as possible.
You will need passport to enter into Botswana that’s valid for at least six months.
If however you’re travelling with an emergency passport or any other kind of travelling document, you will require a visa.
If you are taking a private car to Botswana, please be aware of the requirements and associated costs. It is also suggested that you keep a police certified photocopy of all the documents, including passports.
Certified copy of vehicle registration papers in the name of the driver
Letter of authority from the registered owner if the vehicle is not owned by the driver
If the vehicle is still being financed, carry a letter of authority from the bank (must include dates of travel) together with the vehicle license papers
ZA Sticker which you can purchase at any AA office
Valid South African driving licence
Third-party vehicle insurance (at P50) is required and is valid for 90 days and can be purchased at the Botswana border post.
Clearance certificate: You need a Temporary Import Permit (TIP) to bring a vehicle into Botswana. You can buy this at the Botswana border post
You will need to pay P20 for road fund tax (disc must be displayed, valid for one year)
There is also border crossing fee of P50 for a single entry and P90 for a return trip
Quantum drivers are required to apply for a cross border permit and these can be obtained from the Cross Border Road Transport agency – www.cbrta.co.za or 012 348 1357. The permit application must be accompanied by the following documents:
Tax clearance certificate from SARS
Certified copy of vehicle papers and name of driver
ID document and driver’s licence
Road worthy certificate
Proof of passenger liability insurance
List of passengers and passport numbers
A letter of motivation
Police certified copies of all the required documents
Rules of the road are similar to those in SA
Keep safe following distances
Do not drink and drive
Do not speed
Don’t operate a mobile phone while driving
Don’t drive without your seat belt

The border posts have strict operational times so it’s important to be aware of the limitations – see below for a full breakdown of the various border posts.
Make sure you allow for enough time to get to the game – take into consideration the border crossing – you don’t want to miss the game because you are stuck at the border!
Fuel: Leaded and unleaded petrol and diesel are readily available at petrol stations in Botswana.
Health: No inoculations are required, but hepatitis A and tetanus shots are advisable. To ensure you stay healthy while travelling in Africa, you will need prophylactic Malaria treatment as the risk in Botswana is high.
Gaborone is only 15km from the SA border. The border suggested is near Zeerust.
Distance between Johannesburg and Gaborone is 352 km and will take approximately 4 hours and 24 minutes.
It is prohibited to take any form of pork into Botswana.
Pula is the official currency of Botswana and 1 Rand buys 0,84 Pula.
Capacity of National Stadium, the home ground for the Township Rollers is 25 000.
