Players, staff, administrators, sponsors and dignitaries all gathered at a prestigious awards ceremony at Vodaworld in Midrand on Wednesday evening to celebrate the conclusion of Kaizer Chiefs’ successful 2014/15 season. The club reflected on a record breaking campaign in which the PSL title was won in extraordinary style.
The mighty Amakhosi set all kinds of records along the way, including winning the league with a record number of points (69) and by the biggest ever margin over the runners-up (12 points). Not only did the team boast the most solid defence, with a best ever 19 clean sheets in 30 matches, it also went on a record of 19 consecutive unbeaten games.
“Tonight has marked the culmination of a remarkable season in the club’s history,” said Kaizer Chiefs executive chairman Kaizer Motaung. “The way in which we dominated the PSL and the new records set, have made this past season one of the most memorable in our 45 years of existence. Kaizer Chiefs aspire to achieve the highest standards and we strive to win every game. I feel inspired by the greatness we have demonstrated over the course of the 30 match marathon that is the PSL season and the sprint that is a cup competition. Congratulations to everyone who has contributed in achieving this goal.”
Kaizer Chiefs’ superiority in 2014/15 started with clinching the MTN8 trophy. This demonstrated that the team meant serious business from the beginning of season. The dominance was also acknowledged by the PSL with the Glamour Boys taking home most of the accolades at the end-of-season awards ceremony held on Sunday.
“I have nothing but praise for my players, whose dedication throughout the campaign has deservedly been rewarded by the results we have achieved,” Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter reacted. “I always stress that the league title is a must have, while breaking records is a nice to have. Still, these records are proof of how phenomenal we did this season.”
The Amakhosi believe that collaboration can maximise impact in business and in the community. That’s why the Kaizer Chiefs Foundation has embarked on a programme of collaborations to accelerate positive impact. One such initiative involves an inaugural donation in excess of R1m to The Gift of the Givers.
While inviting Dr Imtiyaz Suliman on stage to collect it on behalf of the charity, executive chairman Motaung commented, “A key aspect of this partnership is giving back and after considerable deliberation we decided that as part of our mobile partnership we will support The Gift of the Givers. This is because as a charity they have demonstrated extraordinary effectiveness in dealing with diverse issues including humanitarian crises around the world, providing disaster relief such as recently done in Nepal. In South Africa, they recently assisted setting up places of safety during the xenophobic attacks, like in Johannesburg and Durban.
A number of awards sponsored were presented on the night in recognition of the individual performances during the season:
