In keeping with a longstanding tradition at the conclusion of every season, Kaizer Chiefs players, technical staff, administrative staff, sponsors and other dignitaries gathered together in Fourways, Johannesburg on Thursday evening, 26 May 2016, to bring the curtain down on the 2015/16 campaign at the annual KC Awards gala.
The Amakhosi used the event to reflect on the season that was and to honour some of the performers who made noteworthy contributions over the past 10 months. 2015/16 saw the Club ring in the changes by installing a new coaching regime and adding fresh faces to the playing personnel. The team went on to reach two cup finals in the first half of the season, but fell short at the last hurdle.
In assessing what has essentially been a season of transition, during which new coaching methods and playing combinations take time to bed in, the prestigious awards ceremony celebrated the effort and unrelenting commitment of the warriors who wore the Gold & Black jersey with pride and fought gallantly for the Kaizer Chiefs badge.
“Tonight we looked back on some of the highlights of the season and showed appreciation to all involved in continuing to contribute to the rich history on this institution,” said Kaizer Chiefs executive chairman Kaizer Motaung. “The season has been somewhat disappointing but we learned some key lessons which will help us as we move forward as Kaizer Chiefs.”
The Club paid special tribute to stalwart midfielder, Reneilwe Letsholonyane, who will be leaving the club after eight years of exceptional service. A favourite among the Amakhosi faithful, ‘Yeye’ won every PSL trophy on offer during his time with the Glamour Boys. Also leaving Naturena is Reyaad Pieterse who joined Chiefs as a youngster and will now begin the next chapter of a promising career with a new challenge. The chairman expressed his appreciation to both players for the diligence, discipline and dedication they showed during their time at the Club.
“I am proud of the two players and wish them the very best in their future endeavours,” he said.
The biggest winner on the night was Williard ‘Salt ‘n Pepper’ Katsande, who picked up his second Player-of-the-Season award in three seasons. The gifted midfield general came good when it mattered most and weighed in with some crucial goals to help the team when the going got tough.
The top Goalscorer award for 2016 went to George Lebese for his eight strikes.
Adding another milestone to his illustrious career, as well as Chiefs’ rich history, Club captain Siphiwe Tshabalala was honoured for amassing 300 appearances in the Amakhosi colours.
The Chairman’s Award went to the grounds man Grivance Malunga in recognition of his long service with the Club, the excellent work of looking after the training facilities and for his loyalty.
