Kaizer Chiefs seek glory at higher level
Kaizer Chiefs seek glory at higher level

Posted in News on Oct 10, 2001.

The history of leading South African club Kaizer Chiefs contains

one glaring omission.

While there is a lengthy list of conquests in the section

reserved for domestic trophies, the page dedicated to successes at

international level remains blank.

Eliminated in the second round of the 1993 African Champions

League and 2000 African Football Confederation Cup, Chiefs are

faring much better this year.

They host Club Africain of Tunisia this weekend in the first leg

of an African Cup Winners Cup semi-final that brings together the

strongest survivors in the annual competition for the Nelson

Mandela Cup.

Most clubs on the continent can but gaze enviously at the

success, popularity and financial health of the Johannesburg

football institution formed in 1970 by national star Kaizer

Motaung, who is now chairman.

But Chiefs cannot claim a place among the African elite until

they have conquered the continent and each South African club

dearly wants to be the first to lift a trophy which honours their

former president. - Sapa-AFP
