Kaizer Chiefs and Platinum Stars played to a goalless draw in their Absa Premiership match that was billed as a potential league decider on Sunday afternoon at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

Chiefs had their best chance in the opening stages through Bernard Parker in the 13th minute. The Bafana Bafana striker lost Stars’ young defender Tshepo Gumede with great skill but then could not finish properly as his low shot shaved the post.

Six minutes later Stars had their first opportunity at goal when their experienced forward Henrico Botes showed great improvisation in the box but his shot came off the post.

Kingston Nkhatha should have given the hosts the lead in the 35th minute. After nice transitional attacking play from Chiefs, Parker played on his strike partner with a beautiful through ball but the Zimbabwean forward attempted to chip Stars keeper Siyabonga Mpontshane but his attempt went wide.

Stars were inches away from getting the opening goal of the match three minutes away from the halftime break. Chiefs failed to clear their lines from a set piece and the ball fell to Benson Mhlongo who saw his ball come off the crossbar with Chiefs keeper Brilliant Khuzwayo way off his line.

Three minutes into the second half, Mhlongo once again had an opportunity at goal but this time Khuzwayo was placed on his goal line to deny the former Orlando Pirates player with a brilliant parry as his header from close range looked goal bound.

The second half was more sedate than the first which saw both sides attacking. Perhaps tiredness crept in as a game that started off at a blistering pace died off until Robert Ngambi nearly stole all three points with an acrobatic shot in injury time that went just wide off goal.

The draw means that with only three matches remaining until the season ends, log leaders Chiefs still have a six point lead over Stars who are occupying second place on the standings.

Chiefs only need six more points from their remaining three matches to have an unassailable lead.
