The twenty five year old Motaung, along with Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Godfrey Sapula, and his team mate and the 2005-06 PSL player of the season Surprise Moriri. Nominations for the award were made public by Premier Soccer League CEO Trevor Phillips at a press conference held in Sandton on Tuesday.
Motaung who has shone for Chiefs during the season has contributed with twelve goals in the league this term, and should he feature in Chiefs' final game of the season and find four goals, he could be up for a second award in the form of the leagues top goal scorer prize.
When commenting about his nomination Kaizer Junior was humble about the fact that he could be named as the best player in the country when he said, “For me just being nominated for this award is a real honour and even if I do not pick up the prize next week, I am just happy to be here.”
The young Chiefs striker who wears the number seven jersey made famous by Marks Maponyane in the 1980’s, himself a two-time player of the season, was complimentary of his fellow nominees Surprise Moriri and Godfrey Sapula and said of them, “For me to be up for this award in the company of two players of the quality of Surprise and Godfrey is a wonderful achievement, these guys played well over the entire season. I do not think you could have found two more consistent players than Surprise and Godfrey. Their entire team was really awesome throughout the season and should either of them win they would truly deserve the honour.”
Asked about his own chances of winning the award as the PSL Player of the season, which is voted for by soccer specific journalists of both the written, visual, audio and electronic media, Junior commented: “On a personal note I do feel that I could have performed more consistently week in and week out and if I had done that then perhaps we would have finished up higher up in the league. When you up for such an award against two players who really did well all season long you have to be happy with getting the nomination. From here on in anything beyond this is a bonus and having said that, I am human after all and I will be holding fingers that I can some how win over the scribes and pick up this award.”
Part of the criteria towards being nominated for the PSL player of the season award is for a player to have displayed exceptional conduct both on and off the pitch, as well has having featured in 75% of his teams league games through the season.
With an impeccable disciplinary record and having made the headlines for all the right reasons throughout the season, Kaizer Junior stands a good chance of going one better than team mate David Obua who was nominated but lost out to Surprise Moriri in the race for the 2005-06 PSL Player of the season award. The good money should be on Kaizer Junior being crowned King of the PSL for 2006-07 when the leagues has its award ceremony at the plush Emperors Palace Complex in Kempton Park just east of Johannesburg next Wednesday.
