Kaizer Chiefs held a press conference this morning to reflect on the record-breaking season and to announce the latest on players’ movements.
Kaizer Chiefs Chairman Kaizer Motaung spoke with kaizerchiefs.com about the latest news.
Coach Stuart Baxter will not return to the Club for next season. What happened?
We sat down with the coach and we had a long discussion on the way forward. He expressed his desire to move on to bigger challenges after having just completed a historic and successful three seasons with us. We parted amicably.
When will the Amakhosi announce Baxter’s replacement?
We will throw the net far and wide in our search to find the right coach. Once we have found him, we will make an announcement.
The contracts of Josta Dladla and Siyabonga Nkosi will not be renewed. What can you say as a final goodbye to them?
They have served honourably at Kaizer Chiefs, contributing to us winning numerous trophies. However, both haven’t played a lot this season and they are getting on with age. It’s sad, but sometimes, as a Club, you have to take tough decisions. That’s why we decided to go forward without them. We need to look as well to the future, needing to invest in younger players.
Itumeleng Khune is also leaving…
We have been trying for almost a year to negotiate a new contract with Khune. But we couldn’t agree on terms. There comes a time when it’s best to go our separate ways. Khune has done brilliantly with us. However, he obviously felt that it was time to make a move to greener pastures.
We wish him all the best in the future.
What about Tefu Mashamaite?
The negotiations with Tefu were unsuccessful – he’s also on his way out.
Mandla Masango has asked to be released.
We offered Mandla a new contract, which he didn’t accept. Instead, Mandla asked to be released and that’s what we decided to agree on. We also wish him all the best.
Katlego Mphela is another who won’t be at Chiefs next season.
Katlego was called into a disciplinary hearing last week for failing to attend a number of important events. It was agreed to part ways.
There has also been speculation that Erick Mathoho will move on.
Erick is a highly valuable member of the team and will be staying at the Club. He still has two years left on his contract.
Phakamani Mngadi will go back to Belgium side AS Eupen, having been on loan to us.
We had great expectations when Phakamani arrived. However, it has not worked out as we had hoped and it has been decided to release him back to his Belgium club.
A few players might go on loan, like Ovidy Karuru, Simphiwe Mtsweni, Zitha Macheke, Chris Matombo and Levy Mokgothu.
It’s always important that players get game time in order to improve. Our up and coming youngsters in particular need to gain this experience.
When will you announce the new signings?
The players will return from holiday on June 18 for testing. Thereafter we will confirm all the new signings for the 2015/2016 season. We can’t divulge this information now, as we are still negotiating with some exciting young talents, while some others are at present still under contract with their current club.
