Kaizer Chiefs Ladies head coach Unathi Mabena has challenged her side to maintain their momentum after they showed admirable character and dedication in securing six valuable points from a demanding weekend of Gauteng Women's Provincial League action.
The Glamour Girls produced two impressive performances, defeating Mito Stars 6-2 at the Kaizer Chiefs Village before following it up with a convincing 3-nil away victory over Mamelodi 11 Stars Ladies on Sunday.
The back-to-back wins see Chiefs move to 18 points on the log standings after nine matches.
Mabena is pleased with the character shown by her players across both encounters.
"I am very pleased with the response from the players this weekend. To score nine goals across two matches while keeping a clean sheet against Mamelodi 11 Stars shows the growth within the group. The players approached both games with the right attitude and worked hard for the six points," she says.
The victories also marked the first time this season that Chiefs have collected maximum points from a double-header weekend. This achievement highlighted the progress made by the squad in recent weeks. While encouraged by the team's current position, the coach insists there is no room for complacency.
"Reaching 18 points after nine games is encouraging, especially for a team that is still building,” she adds. “We have shown improvement in recent weeks, but we understand that there is still a long way to go in the season. The important thing is that the players remain focused and continue working hard every day.”
Attention now turns to another important test as the Phefeni Ladies prepare to host Blue Birds Ladies at the Kaizer Chiefs Village on Saturday. With confidence growing inside the team, Mabena believes the next challenge will require the same level of commitment that delivered success over the weekend.
"Blue Birds will provide a different challenge and we expect a very competitive match. We have enjoyed a good weekend, but those results count for very little if we do not prepare properly for the next game. Our focus now shifts completely to our next fixture and making sure we are ready to perform at our best," Mabena concludes.
Kick-off for Saturday’s game is 14h00.
