The 30-year-old reserve goalkeeper, Kabelo Metsimetsi believes that he has a future at the Club despite stiff competition in the goalkeeping department. Taking questions from the supporters Kabelo says he has improved a lot since joining the Amakhosi at the start of last season.

Have you always been a Khosi for life?

Kabelo Metsimetsi: I was born a Pirate but since joining The Amakhosi, I am a big fan. My favourite player here is Abia Nale.

I think you need to be loaned out so that you can get more game time…

Kabelo Metsimetsi: I am open about the loan but this is not in my hands. I am working hard at training pushing for my place in the team. My focus now is to fight for my place here at Chiefs.

You have got talent and I see you as the next Brain Baloyi but do you rate yourself as a shot stopper or are you an all round keeper?

Kabelo Metsimetsi: First I must thank you for the compliment. Brain Baloyi is a legend here at Chiefs and I watched him growing up. It feels good when people compare you to him.

As for your question, I am a shot stopper. I am currently working at improving all aspects of my game.

How do you feel about warming the bench for so long while both Itumeleng Khune and Arthur Bartman are doing so well?

Kabelo Metsimetsi: I am grateful to have had an opportunity to compete with such good goalkeepers in my career. I am taking this as a challenge. I am not discouraged by the lack of game time but working hard at training to convince the coach that I can do the job when given a chance.

I am learning a lot from both Itu (Itumeleng Khune) and Arthur (Bartman). There is also Thela (Ngobeni) who like me is waiting in the wings. Goalkeeper Coach Rainer Dinkelacker has been working hard with me in making sure that I am in top shape. Thanks to his inspiration, I am waiting patiently when my chance comes and I will grab it with both hands.

Playing for Kaizer Chiefs must be the biggest thing to happen to you as a player, because not many players get to don this historical and famous jersey in their lifetime. Not many players seem to understand its magnitude. How are you going to make sure that you live up to the tradition of winning cups and being the best player to have ever played for Kaizer Chiefs?

Kabelo Metsimetsi: Kaizer Chiefs is one of the biggest teams in Africa and in world football and playing for them is something special that I am not taking for granted. Growing up it was my wish to play for one of the big teams…like I said before I am working hard at training and when I get my chance I will grab it.

As players we know the responsibility of donning the gold and black jersey. There is a lot of expectations from fans because of what the Club has achieved in the past and is continuing to achieve. It is our wish as the current generation of players to continue with that legacy.

What was going through your mind after that Ajax Cape Town game at Orlando Stadium (Kaizerchiefs.com: Kaizer Chiefs drew 3 all with Ajax bombing out of MTN8 with 4-3 aggregate score)?

Kabelo Metsimetsi: (Taking a pause) I remember when the coach announced that I was going to start the game. It was a bit of a shock for me and the stadium was packed to rafters. It was the first time for me to play in such a big crowd.

It was not a good day in the office, as we could not reach the final. I was a bit down but for me it was a matter of going back to the training ground and work on my mistakes on the day. I am grateful from the support I got from teammates in particular Dominic Isaacs who told me to ‘move on and focus on the next assignment’.

Where do you come from? Are you married and how many children do you have? What is your future like at Chiefs taking into consideration that you are a fourth choice keeper?

Kabelo Metsimetsi: I was born Kabelo Abel Metsimetsi in a place called Richtie in the Free State. I am not married but I do have a girlfriend. I will not give you the name (laughing).

I have a child, a 2-year-old girl by the name of Keketso. She is the light of my life and I am grateful to God for giving me a reason to smile every day.

I like to think that I have improved a lot as a goalkeeper since joining Chiefs at the beginning of last season. I have been working very hard at training with the rest of the goalkeepers and I believe that I still have a future in this team.

How has life been at Chiefs?

Kabelo Metsimetsi: Life at Chiefs has been good from day one. The reception I got from everyone at the Club was unbelievable. All I want to do now is to train hard and grab the opportunity when the coach gives me an opportunity.

Kabelo how do you keep fit, because you spend a lot of time without playing, and does it affect you emotionally?

Kabelo Metsimetsi: Goalkeeper Coach Rainer Dinkelacker is pushing us hard at training and generally throughout my career I never had problems with fitness. At this stage what we are doing at training is enough for me. We of course vary our sessions to attend to certain areas of my body but fitness wise I do not have a problem at all.

We all want to play but the truth is that both Khune and Bartman have been doing very well which has made it difficult for me to break in the team. I will just keep on working hard at training and the rest will follow.
