Despite making only a handful of appearances in the gold and black jersey, Mtubatuba born midfielder, Steven Ncanana has proved to be a good investment for Amakhosi.

In this interview Steven reveals his passion for the ‘Beautiful game’ and his burning ambition to win the league with the Glamour Boys.

Tell me about your football background…

Vukile Bhengu

Steven Ncanana: I come from a football family as my father used to play football when he was younger. I also started at a tender age of about 8 at Golden Stars. I moved to Durban where I played for Bush Bucks on the Vodacom League then Nomvethe FC (owned by former Chiefs star Siyabonga Nomvethe).

I played my best football there also in the Vodacom League. I then joined Nathi Lions in the 1st Division.

Growing up I have always loved football and my dreams were fulfilled when I joined the Glamour Boys on a three-year contract in July last year.

What are you aiming to achieve during your stay at Chiefs?

Momo Sikwane

Steven Ncanana: I have already tasted success here winning both the Telkom Charity and Telkom Knockout. It is my dream to win the league with the Club. It is also my intention to play regularly for the Club. This will not be easy but I will continue working hard at training.

Would you agree with me if I say that Kaizer Chiefs need top quality striker?

William Molotsi

Steven Ncanana: I think we have top strikers at Chiefs and currently Knowledge (Musona) is the leading top goalscorer in the league.

Who is your favourite player in the PSL and in Europe?

Sizwe Senzeni

Steven Ncanana: (takes a pause) It has to be ‘Mboro Magic’, Knowledge Musona! The boy is quite something and it is a privilege playing with him at Chiefs. In Europe I like Clarence Seedorf of AC Milan although I am an Arsenal fan through and through.

Who is Steven Ncanana?

Paul Malapane

Steven Ncanana: Steven Ncanana was born in a village called Mtubatuba in KwaZulu Natal. Steven is a pretty shy guy who does not like to talk but he is good hearted. My family means everything to me and I am also focused on my job here at Chiefs.

Who are your closest friends in the team?

Thando Sigo

Steven Ncanana: I talk to all the guys in the team and I spend time sometimes with Knowledge Musona and Sthembiso Ngcobo but I prefer to be alone most of the time.

How would you describe your style of play? What are your strengths and weaknesses?

Thabo Mpshe

Steven Ncanana: As a player I like keeping it simple but mostly I follow what the coach expects of me on the field of play. I am a team player and as for my weaknesses I cannot reveal them all I can say is that I am working on them at training with the help of the Technical Team.

How do you spend your spare time?

Steven Ncanana: It is very difficult to get spare time here at Chiefs as we are always training or doing appearances. When we have a day off I prefer being at home to watch some action movies. I also listen to House and Gospel music.

How did it feel when you heard that the Mighty Amakhosi is after your signature?

Sechaba Modisenyane

Steven Ncanana: I was over the moon for sure! Kaizer Chiefs is the biggest Club in the country and it is every young player’s dream to don the famous gold and black. When I eventually signed my family and everyone in Mtubatuba was very happy for me. I am the only soccer player in my village that has made it to this level.

Tell us about your love life...

Steven Ncanana: (takes a pause) I do have a girlfriend. She stays in KZN but will not give out the name. (Smiles)
