With previous league victories over Free State Stars and Amazulu, it was Chiefs' third straight win in the ABSA Premiership, which saw them go into the top eight on the league above Swallows on goal difference.
Mabhudi Khenyeza, who opened the scoring for Chiefs on Sunday during their 3-1 win over Swallows, scored his fifth goal in a row in five matches in all competition.
Three in a row
The Amakhosi have now collected the full compliment of points from their last three outings and in the process have scored eight goals while conceding just two.
The last time Chiefs won three consecutive league matches was a season ago when they managed to defeat Moroka Swallows, Black Leopards and Amazulu and will now be looking to make it four on the trot against Sundowns on Sunday.
Winning four league games in a row was a feat last achieved by Chiefs during the 2004 – 2005 season when they won their final four matches of the season.
Starting with Swallows, followed up by pulsating and heart stopping wins over Bush Bucks and SuperSport and culminating with a 2-0 win over Bloemfontein Celtic. That victory over Celtic helped clinch Chiefs the 2004 – 2005 PSL title.
Five up
Mabhudi Khenyeza now has the opportunity to take his goal tally for the current campaign into double figures, after he scored his sixth league goal, and eighth in all competition, when he headed Chiefs into the lead against Swallows.
Khenyeza needs two more goals to take his goal tally in all competitions to ten for the 2007 – 2008 season. His goal on Sunday also saw him equal Shaun Bartlett’s feat of finding the back of the net in five consecutive matches.
Bartlett, during the 2006 – 2007 season, scored in league games against Swallows, Leopards, Pirates, Maritzburg United and Santos during November and December 2006.
While Khenyeza has scored four goals in March, two in Nedbank Cup matches against Ajax Cape Town and Sundowns, and two in the league against Free State Stars and Amazulu, he made it five in five with his strike against Swallows - which was Chiefs' first game for April 2008.
