“Losing to any team is difficult. When you lose to Pirates it is as they say a very bitter pill to swallow. I would have preferred to be getting ready today for a trip to Durban instead of trying to forget about our loss on Sunday. I am trying not to think about the game but it keeps on running through my mind”, said a disappointed Khune.
The Chiefs net minder, when reflecting back on Sunday’s game, added: “Pirates came with a game plan and executed it well -- credit to them for that. I felt we did not take on the game in our usual way. Having the away goal from the first leg could have been a disadvantage in a way.”
While he is bitterly disappointed with the loss to Pirates, Khune thanked the Chiefs fans for their encouragement and support throughout both legs of the semifinal tie. “when I went to take my spare gloves out of the goal after the game on Sunday I was crying and did not want to look at the fans who were seated behind the goal.
"I felt that I had disappointed them and could not face them, but still they were shouting messages of support and I appreciate them. It is that kind of support that has made us more determined to get over this and look ahead. There is still a long way to go in the league and we have two other cup competitions to still look forward to.”
Chiefs will next be in action in the middle of October and Khune feels the time off will allow them to regroup and be well prepared for their next assignment against Platinum Stars in the Absa Premiership on October 16.
“It is a while to be inactive but it is better for us right now to have this time. The guys will continue training and working hard. By the time we play Stars we will be rested and rejuvenated. Next week I hope to be in the Bafana Bafana squad that travels to Sierra Leone for an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.”
