Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune and defender Erick Mathoho will start for South Africa’s Under-23s in their first match at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games tonight. The opponent is home side Brazil.

With Khune and Mathoho roped in as over-aged players, due to their experience, it is hoped that the South Africans will improve on their last performance at the Olympics, which came in 2000. Despite beating Brazil, the Under-23s failed to go past the group stage.

South Africa and Brazil will meet today, Thursday, 4 August, at Brasília’s Mané Garrincha Stadium. Kick-off is at 16:00 local time (at 21:00, South African time).

South Africa’s starting XI: Khune; Mekoa, Mobara, Coetzee, Mathoho; Mvala, Motupa, Dolly (c), Modiba; Masuku, Mothiba

Subs: February, Moerane, Mngonyama, Malepe, Ntshangase, Sandows, Morris
