Kaizer Chiefs held their 2012/13 Players' Awards in a glamorous style at the Vodaworld on Friday, 31 May 2013.
The event was hosted by Kaizer Chiefs Executive Chairman Kaizer Motaung and attended by the who is who from sport, entertainment and politicians including the Minister of Sport and Recreation Fikile Mbalula.
The Executive Chairman received a glowing tribute from Minister Mbalula and through video clips played with messages from the staff and players.
In his response The Chairman couldn't contain his appreciation for the tribute; "I am humbled by this tribute"; he said before he called on to the stage the former players Cyril Nzama and Brian Baloyi to receive their Chairman' Special Awards for their contribution to the success of the Club.
"I would like to thank Coach Baxter for the job well done. And also it is worth mentioning as I congratulate Khune for winning the PSL Awards that his achievements must be viewed as a reflection of the whole team and not for him alone"; added 'Chincha Guluva'.
The Fair Play Award is awarded to the player who displayed a good sportsmanship on and off the field of play and was awarded to Eric Mathoho.
Striker Bernard Parker was rewarded for the Goal of the Year and Top Goal Scorer. The hard tackling midfielder Willard Katsande walked away with the Most Improved Player.
Itumeleng Khune continued with his appetite for winning following his sweeping of the trophy table at the PSL Awards when he scooped the Amakhosi Readers’ Choice, Kaizer Chiefs Online Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Season and the Player of the Season.
Earlier on Friday, Gordon Igesund confirmed Bafana Bafana’s No 1 goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune as the permanent senior national team captain.
The winners walked away with a cash prize & trophy for each award while Khune added a Nissan Duke for the Player of the Season award, to his achievements.
Khune thanked everyone concerned with his development especially his family, the Chairman for giving him the platform to showcase his talent, fellow teammates and went on to make special mention of his Mentor and Goalkeeper Coach Rainer for his patience with him during the training sessions as well as Coach Baxter for believing in him.
All the players and the technical team received the Appreciation Awards. The Players of the Month for the season also received their Awards.
The Marketing Director Jessica Motaung thanked everyone who contributed to the successful season and in particular he commended the sponsors Vodacom, Nike, Hollard, Carling Black Label, SuperSport, Springbok Atlas and Nissan for their support.
