A number of Chiefs players were involved in 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying action for their respective national teams throughout the African continent this past weekend, the Amakhosi were represented in the Bafana Bafana squad that drew with Sierra Leone in Freetown as well as in the Burundi and Zimbabwe national teams.

Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune was Bafana Bafana’s hero as he wiped away the memory of 2008 when he was on the losing end in Freetown as his amazing display ensured that South Africa left Sierra Leone with a point as the teams played out a goalless draw against the ‘Leone Stars’.

Khune produced three wonder saves keeping at bay the three Bangura’s of Mohamed, Ibrahim and Mustapha, to ensure that he kept his third consecutive clean sheet for Bafana Bafana. Siphiwe Tshabalala and Reneilwe Letsholonyane also started the game for South Africa.

Tshabalala in particular was subjected to a number of harsh tackles from the home side, Letsholonyane was replaced late in the second half by his Chiefs teammate Sthembiso Ngcobo.

Niger defeated defending African Champions Egypt 1-0 in Niamey which means that after two games Bafana lead Group G and their next assignment will be against Egypt in March next year.

Knowledge Musona started in attack alongside the highly experienced Benjani Mwaruwari for Zimbabwe against the Cape Verde Islands in Harare it seemed as though the Islanders had done their research on the Chiefs hit man and kept him bottled up throughout the game which ended in a goalless stalemate.

The supply line from the midfield to the front two was cut and Musona cut a lonely figure up front, Cape Verde remain at the top of Group A followed by Mali and Zimbabwe who remain undefeated while Liberia are bottom of the pool.

Amakhosi defender Valery Nahayo and his Burundi team went down 1-0 to the Ivory Coast on Saturday afternoon in Bujumbura, midfielder Romaric who plays his club football in Spain for Sevilla fired the game’s only goal off a free kick in the 33rd minute.

It was overall a valiant display from Burundi who were unlucky not to have at least come out of the game with a point, the Ivoirians lead Group H while Burundi drop to third spot behind Benin.
