With Emile Baron currently nursing a shoulder injury and Chiefs other goalkeeper Tladi Mathibe on his way out of Naturena, Amakhosi coach Ernst Middendorp has had to inform the South African Football Association that Itumeleng Khune will be unavailable for selection to do duty with the under – 20 national team. Khune along with three players Tlou Molekwane, Bandile Kiviet and Stephen Faba from the Kaizer Chiefs under – 19 team had been called up by national under - 20 coach Serame Letsoa. To participate in a training camp from the 15th – 21st May with the camp culminating in Amajita taking on the Congo u-20 national team.

With Chiefs current keeper situation, Itumeleng will be deputizing to Rowen Fernandez and if necessary will have to stand between the sticks for Amakhosi. Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp commenting on the issue said. “We do not want to deprive him of the opportunity to play for his country but our current situation is such that we will need him for our last league game of the season against SuperSport United as well as The ABSA Cup final”. The camp falls within the same week that Amakhosi will be taking on Orlando Pirates in the season ending ABSA Cup Final.

Khune has been a regular feature in the u-20 national team over the past few months. At nineteen years old, he will gain some invaluable experience from going to the ABSA Cup Final - Experience that in the future could count in his favour when competing for the Bafana Bafana jersey in the not too distant future.
