“Lucky who?” screamed the fans as Lucky stood next to his brother, Itumeleng Khune who was to replace Thela Ngobeni as the Telkom Charity Cup between Chiefs and Pirates headed for penalties on Saturday.

Khune who has scored 10 goals in his last five outings for Kaizer Chiefs U-20 side made an immediate impression in the game despite coming in the dying minutes and should have grabbed a winner in the 90th minute as his header sailed over the bar.

“I should have scored but saw goalkeeper (Moeneeb Joseph) coming and thought of lobbying it but it went over the bar,” said the young striker as he reflected on his first appearance for the senior team.

“It was a special day for me and I have waited for this opportunity for a long time. The thought of playing against Orlando Pirates did not cross my mind and I was surprised when the coach told me to get ready. I want to thank the Technical Team for giving me an opportunity to fulfill my childhood dream. The guys were also very encouraging and I am grateful for the support. I am going to continue working hard on my game and anything else will be a bonus,” he said.

“I roomed with David Mathebula the night before the game and he was really helpful and when the coach asked me to warm up I became really nervous. The noise in the stadium was unbearable…I remember standing next to Itumeleng trembling and he noticed and told me to ‘relax and don’t put yourself under pressure’. To walk on to the pitch with my brother was so special. I did well with my first touch and that gave me confidence,” he said.

A delighted Khune told kaizerchiefs.com that his biggest dream is to play for Kaizer Chiefs senior team and that dream might not be far off as the coach invited the player to train with the first team.

“I was looking forward playing against Pirates U-20 team on Sunday but the games were postponed. I am going to continue working hard at training and even if it means scoring regularly against Itumeleng, he knows the are no favours in football,” he added jokingly.
