Rotson Kilambe’s 28th minute strike was sufficient enough to win all three points for a very youthful looking Kaizer Chiefs reserves, against their Mamelodi Sundowns counterparts on Monday afternoon.

Monday afternoon's win ensures that the Chiefs reserves remain on top of the league standings and in addition Ace Khuse’s team have kept up their 100% start to the second round of games. While the first forty five minutes managed to produce the only goal of the game, it must be said that the match came alive in the second forty five. With both teams spreading the play and stretching each other to the maximum, The Amakhosi do have goalkeeper Ryan Wuest to thank for helping them snatch the points as the Chiefs keeper made a number of telling stops in the second half which guided Chiefs to their third straight win.

The first half lacked much entertainment and was low on goal mouth action, the first shot in anger at goal came 21 minutes in to the game when Sundowns striker Maringa let fly from way outside the Chiefs 18 yard area. It was no surprise when the ball flew wide and high over Wuest’s goal, three minutes later and Chiefs were able to create an opening as Gert Schalkwyk managed to play his way out of trouble. Schalkwyk managed to pick out David Radebe who was able to create space for himself and shot towards goal, only for Thipe to get in the way and block his shot. On 27 minutes Gert Schalkwyk had a crack at goal from 50 yards out, his well timed effort flew past Mabokwane but could only manage to skim the cross bar as the ball flew out.

Chiefs got the break through they were looking for in the 28th minutes, David Radebe was the catalyst behind the Chiefs goal as he raced down the left wing he was able to lift up his head as he cut back across the Sundowns goal mouth. With one quick glance across the goal Radebe thought quickly and played the ball past the Sundowns keeper to Rotson Kilambe, who had the easy job of walking the ball home to put Chiefs 1-0 ahead. On the stroke of half time Sundowns were almost let back into the game, it came as Maringa and Chiefs defender Mthimunye were tussling for a ball played over the Chiefs defence. As Mthimunye was about to knock the ball back for Ryan Wuest to clear he saw his keeper run off his line, as Mthimunye hesitated Maringa rounded Wuest and pushed wide before hitting the ball towards the empty net. It was not to be for Maringa as Mthimunye made up some ground and from nowhere he managed to get in the way of the ball on the goal line and turned it away to safety. Chiefs lead 1-0 going into the halftime break.

Eleven minutes of the second had lapsed when David Radebe was able to fend off his marker and managed to pick out Rotson Kilambe lurking close to the Sundowns six yard area, Kilambe collected the pass and from point blank range shot goal wards and was well surprised as Mabokwane made a miraculous one handed save to keep out the ball. On the hour mark Thipe found some space to the left of the Chiefs goal, and unleashed a wicked curling shot which Ryan Wuest did well to track its path and was able to turn the ball to safety. From the ensuing corner Sundowns played the ball quickly to Makhanya, whose first time shot was deflected goal wards once more Wuest was able to get back and tipped the ball over to safety.

Inside the final ten minutes of the game Sundowns could easily have found themselves on a level footing, in addition Chiefs might have added to their first half strike. First up with six minutes to go Sundowns substitute Rampatle sent in a pin point cross from the right wing, which Maringa judged to perfection and manage to hit the ball goal wards with a superb over head kick. Ryan Wuest was in no mood to be beaten and he was at full stretch to make a superb save on the line and kept his goal in tact, two minutes later and Chiefs launched an attack of their own. Rotson Kilambe caught out the Sundowns defence when he played a deceptive back pass to Sandile Zuke. Who in turn was able to have a crack at goal and brought the best out of the Sundowns goalkeeper who had to dive to his left to save Zuke’s low driven shot.

The last word though was left to Chiefs keeper Ryan Wuest who rubber stamped his nomination as Chiefs match winner, when he thwarted Sundowns final attack deep into injury time, Vesi found Maringa who blasted the ball towards goal. With a shot that looked destined for the back of the net but it was Ryan Wuest’s day, and he dived to the far end of his goal and punched the ball out to safety.
