The Namibian Club, who finished fifth on the Namibia Premier League log at the end of the 2009/2010 season, will host the Amakhosi at the Sam Nujoma Stadium in what many will see as an extension of the World Cup fever that has taken over Africa. The International friendly will take place after the completion of the first World Cup on African soil.
The friendly encounter will showcase the two Clubs against each other at the San Nujoma Stadium in the Katutura Township. Fans and supporters for both Clubs as well as other soccer lovers are expected to travel to the stadium to show their support for their respective teams.
The South African Glamour Boys, Kaizer Chiefs, are known for their large following in South Africa and throughout the continent, and their famous Gold and Black colours will no doubt paint the streets of Windhoek as many anticipate their arrival in Namibia.
The event, of which Hollard Namibia is the main sponsor and, Standard Bank a Co-sponsor, will bring two culturally diverse yet similar nations together. History between the two countries was highlighted in1990, when Namibia gained independence from South Africa. Culturally, the meeting of the two Clubs marks a significant reunion of Namibian and South African players and football brands as player exchanges have been made in the past. Kaizer Chiefs were notably successful with Namibian duo Robert Nauseb and Mohammed Ouseb from 1997-2001.
The pair added to the Club’s colourful football history and record of success, as they lifted several trophies with the Glamour Boys. The Namibian connection has been in existence in the early days of the Club’s success, with Players like Herman ‘Pele’ Blaske, Pius ‘Garincha’ Aigowa, Lemmi Narib and Oscar Mengo making their mark with the Amakhosi.
Kaizer Chiefs Founder and Executive Chairman Kaizer Motaung had this to say about the trip to Namibia: “We have a history with the Namibian football fraternity, due to past Players being a part of the Team during the Club’s formative years. We are aware of the significance of the game, it is also important for us because our Players are used to a rigorous preseason campaign, the camp in Windhoek will give them the opportunity to begin with their preparations. We are also very excited as we know that the Amakhosi have fans outside of South Africa, we look forward to seeing the rest of the Kaizer Chiefs Family in Namibia.”
Namibian football fans are rarely treated to a South African team on their shores, while the Namibian National Team played Bafana Bafana in a game before the much anticipated FIFA World Cup in May 2010. The encounter between the Brave Hearted Namibians and Bafana Bafana ended in a (1-1) draw, but it is expected the Namibia Football International 2010 to produce lots of excitement and goals.
The match will kick off at 15:30, with gates opening at 12:00. Fans are urged to come early to the stadium to enjoy an exciting and tantalizing entertainment lineup featuring top local artists and a curtain-raiser. Fans and supporters can look forward to a tantalizing game of football between the two teams during the main game.
