George Lebese scored a brace as Kaizer Chiefs defeated SuperSport United 2-0 in a Nedbank Cup quarterfinal at the FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The midfielder found the back of the net twice in the final minutes as the match seemed to be headed for extra time.
The first chance fell for Chiefs in the 8th minute when Siphiwe Tshabalala’s outswinging corner found Tefu Mashamaite at the far post, but the centre-back headed wide of the target.
Amakhosi got the first effort on target in the 23rd minute when Tshabalala cut inside from the right corner of the box, only to fire his low shot straight at Ronwen Williams.
Supersport had their first effort on target in the 38th minute when Bradley Grobler met a low throw-in from Thabo Moloi at the near post, but his header was saved by Itumeleng Khune.
Grobler had another opportunity in the second minute of added time when he collected the ball just outside the box before firing on goal, but his shot swerved wide of the upright.
SuperSport threatened to open the scoring ten minutes into the second half with Grobler knocking the ball down for Thuso Phala, who then fired wide from the edge of the penalty area.
Khune conceded a freekick on the right in the 58th minute when he was adjudged to have handled the ball outside the box. The ball was passed back to Sibusiso Khumalo, who drilled his effort just wide of goal.
Chiefs were awarded a freekick in central position just outside of the box in the 75th minute when George Lebese was brought down by Enocent Mkhabela, but Bernard Parker’s effort was saved by Williams.
Both sides then had efforts from range but Mor Diouf fired wide from a freekick in the 83rd minute, while George Maluleka shot over the crossbar at the other end four minutes later.
Chiefs took the lead in the 90th minute when substitute Siboniso Gaxa broke through on the right before squaring the ball for Lebese to thump into the back of the net from close range.
Lebese grabbed his brace four minutes later as Lebese made a late run into the box to reach a square pass from Tshabalala before beating Williams with a left-footed strike to secure a place in the next round.
