Kaizer Chiefs easily went past Golden Arrows, winning 3-1 in an Absa Premiership match at Soweto’s FNB Stadium on Tuesday evening. George Lebese scored a brace in the first half, while Bernard Parker added another after the break.

Coach Steve Komphela decided to make a few changes compared to the team that lost 3-1 to Orlando Pirates on Saturday.

Lucky Baloyi, Kgotso Moleko, Hendrick Ekstein and Bernard Parker came into the starting line-up, while Siboniso Gaxa and Siphiwe Tshabalala began on the bench. Reneilwe Letsholonyane and Camaldine Abraw were given a break.

The game started a bit at a slow pace, but everybody was awake when Moleko stormed into Arrows’ box in the sixth minute and was brought done. Referee Eketsang Setloboko immediately pointed to the penalty spot. George Lebese coolly slotted the ball in the back of the net, 1-0.

Chiefs even got more chances in the 13th minute with first Edward Manqele getting one-on-one with the Arrows goalkeeper, but he was unable to finish. This was followed by an excellent shot from Parker, which was brilliantly saved by the ‘keeper, diving to his left.

The home side continued to have the upper hand and it became 2-0 in the 23nd minute when the ball landed in front of Lebese in the box, finishing neatly.

Ekstein did well in the middle, while Lebese, Parker and Manqele looked dangerous every time they touched the ball close to the Arrows box.

No more goals were scored in the first half.

The second half started bad for Arrows with their midfielder Gladwin Shitolo receiving a red card for tackling Baloyi with his studs up.

However, instead of Chiefs adding a goal with the visitors being down to 10-men, it was Arrows that scored. Lebese lost the ball in his own half to Siyabonga Dube, who stormed forward before hitting an absolute sitter. There was little Itumeleng Khune could do, 1-2.

Amakhosi created a few more chances, but struggled to finish. The home side was also unable to show the fine form displayed in the first half.

Still, another goal arrived in the 78th minute. Substitute Siphelele Mthembu was sent deep by Lebese. Mthembu excellently crossed the ball to Parker, who easily slotted the ball home, 3-1.

It was overall a well-deserved victory over Arrows, while Lebese was selected as the Man-of-the-Match for his excellent performance.

Amakhosi have now 17 points from 10 games, moving into the Top 5 on the Absa Premiership log.

Chiefs’ next game is at home against Orlando Pirates in the Telkom Knockout semifinal at the FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon, 7 November (kick-off is at 15:00).
