The legends of Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates played to a 1-1 draw at the Oppenheimer (Orkney) Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

There was a good crowd with about 4 000 people in attendance. The game was also in remembrance of the 42 supporters that died in the Orkney disaster on 13 January 1991.

At the time, there was a pre-season friendly between the two clubs. The players of both sides laid flowers yesterday on a monument to remember the fallen that died during the stampede in the overcrowded stadium, which happened after Fani Madida equalised for Amakhosi.

Chiefs legend Wellington Manyathi was part of the squad at Orkney in 1991. “It was nice and sad at the same time when we laid the flowers,” he reacts. “Sad for the families of the deceased and for what happened on that day, but it was nice that we remembered the fallen. We should actually do this every year, just out of respect.”

Sunday’s match was an entertaining affair. Chiefs’ starting line-up was as follows: Baloyi; Nzama, McCarthy, Manyathi, Seale; Zwane, Kubheka, Spencer, Makua, Fredericks; Khumalo.

Pirates had former stars like Williams Okpara, Benedict Vilikazi, Ronny Zondi, Eugene Zwane and Steve Lekoelea.

The Buccaneers were the better side in the first half, going into the break 1-0 up thanks to Benedict Vilikazi’s goal.

Amakhosi, however, were dominant in the second half, with Ace Khuse, who had come in at the start of the second half, scoring the equaliser from the penalty spot. Chiefs got a few more chances to win, but, in the end, looking at both halves, 1-1 was a fair result.
