Madida played three seasons for Besiktas in the early nineties, helping the Turkish side win a league title and a cup. It was the first time that Amakhosi’s assistant-coach played in the tournament, which was started in 2002 and includes Turkey’s four big championship winning sides: Fenerbahce, Galatasaray, Trabzanspor and Besiktas.
It was also for the first time that Besiktas won the Celebrity Tournament, which included former Turkish international stars like Hakan Unsal, who used to play for Galatasaray and English side Blackburn Rovers. “Besiktas should have invited me earlier,” reacted Madida with a smile.
The former Kaizer Chiefs striker travelled back to South Africa with a medal, thanks to winning the Celebrity Tournament, and a trophy as recognition for having been selected Besiktas’ best foreign player. “It was good to be back in Turkey and win this trophy,” adds Madida, who had the 20 000 spectators cheering excitedly for each of his two goals. “The passionate support of the Turkish crowd is always something special.”
