Amakhosi striker Lehlohonolo Majoro is expected to miss Bafana Bafana’s next two games after injuring his shin during South Africa’s 2-0 victory over Angola on Wednesday day in Durban.
Majoro became the first Chiefs player since Patrick Mayo at the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations to score at the tournament and the third overall after Mayo and Siyabonga Nomvete who netted at the 2000 competition, when he scored South Africa’s second goal after being set up by Chiefs teammate Reneilwe Letsholanyane.
The Chiefs striker was injured in injury time at the end of the second half when he clashed with Angolan goalkeeper Lama, he said afterwards to the official tournament website; “I’m definitely out for our last group game against Morocco. The injury isn’t looking good for now but the doctors have assured me that it can be fixed soon. So, it’s not a long term injury. I had seven stitches to my shin.”
Majoro also added in comments after the game that although he started the game against Angola from the bench he was not going to let the opportunity slip by - he was quoted as saying; “I didn’t get much game time in the build-up to the tournament but I knew that if I get a chance, I will use it. Tonight (Wednesday) the coach gave me a chance and I grabbed it. When I walked on the field, I knew that this was my time to prove to myself that I can deliver at this level,”
Majoro will miss South Africa’s final group game against Morocco on Sunday at Moses Mabhida (Kick-off is at 19:00) and a possible ¼ final meeting against the runner up from Group B which could be either of Ghana, Mali or the DR Congo, he is confident that he will be available for selection should South Africa reach the ½ Finals.
