Amakhosi midfielder George Maluleka is eager to get onto the field and face his former team SuperSport United this Saturday evening at the FNB Stadium, when Chiefs host Matsasantsa in an Absa Premiership clash.
Speaking of his upcoming reunion against the team he represented in two spells Maluleka says: “Playing against players you are familiar with is always a challenge, because you know each other but it is exciting as well.”
Maluleka is ready for all that SuperSport will have to throw at Amakhosi. “You always need to make sure you at your best for things to come right on the field, I am excited, and I know its going to be a challenging game,” he adds.
The midfielder who has scored two goals in league games for Chiefs against SuperSport which came during a 2-1 home win in 2015/16 and in a 1-0 home victory last season, believes that his friendship with SuperSport goalkeeper Ronwen Williams is the driving force behind him when faces them.
As he went onto elaborate, “to be honest Ronwen is the one I am after, him and I always have this competition which started on the training ground when we were teammates. So when it happens in a game and I score I feel like I have the upper hand nothing against him work is work, to score is always good for your morale and confidence and I am always happy to help the team out.”
Furthermore on his friendship with the SuperSport netminder Ronwen Williams who he has twice scored past in previous league games he says: “we are close on and off the field, but like I said its going to be a battle this weekend and all the friendship goes away when we on the field.”
The hardworking midfielder who started and finished Chiefs last league encounter a 1-0 win over Black Leopards earlier in August has been casting an eye over SuperSport’s recent performances.
“SuperSport have done very well in their last two games scoring six goals without conceding. They are looking good and must be high on confidence,” comments Maluleka who equally holds the view that Amakhosi have made a good start to the 2019-20 season which bodes well for the team.
“We have started very well. We are still coming up and it will be a very intense game with two teams on good form. It is going to be a big game and I am looking forward to it,” he says.
Maluleka is targeting a third successive league win and another three points from this coming weekend’s game as he goes on to further comment: “it is very important that we get the three points because we playing at home we need to make sure we have a very high win percentage at home if we want to challenge for the title. To keep the momentum going we need another win although it is still early on in the season, we need to make sure that we start on a good note.”
On a personal note Maluleka who had a role in the build up to Chiefs match winning goal against Highlands Park in a 3-2 win on the opening day of the season. He provided the assist for Mulomowandau Mathoho’s goal in the 1-0 win over Black Leopards and feels positive about his contributions this far. He hopes to continue playing a role in the team’s success going forward.
Maluleka has the right ingredients to once again perform optimally when Chiefs face SuperSport. “I feel good, I am in a very good space, I am happy and I am healthy. The only thing that made me not perform at the level I demand of myself was the injuries and the knocks” he concludes.
