Mamelodi is the spiritual home of Mamelodi Sundowns, just like Phefeni.is the birthplace of Kaizer Chiefs. Many soccer fans in Mamelodi support Amakhosi. Five of them came to visit Chiefs Village or, as Deon Kekana explains: “We wanted to see our second home.”
Deon was accompanied by Goitsimang Maepa, Sadie Manganya, Palesa Zwane and Mpumi Nthlengethwa. They also spent time in the KC Retail shop at the Village.
Whilst it is their first visit to the Village’s KC Retail shop, they visit the KC Retail outlet at the Tramshed shopping centre in Pretoria more often. “We go there quite a lot,” Sadie confirms.
Explaining being from Mamelodi whilst supporting the Glamour Boys, Deon answers: “The majority of soccer followers in Mamelodi support the Amakhosi. Mamelodi loves Chiefs.”
He admits though that they have been teased in recent times, with people saying: “Shouldn’t you rather support the team that wins and are the African Champions?”
Deon, however, always reacts as follows: “What winning team? Look at the history of Kaizer Chiefs and all the cups and league titles we have won, more than 90 in total.”
“That usually keeps my detractors quiet,” he adds with a wry smile on his face.
Deon’s brother was actually at the Phateng High School with George Lebese, who grew up in Mamelodi Ext 5.
They are all impressed with what they see at the Village.
Deon’s first time visit to Chiefs’ headquarters in Naturena confirms his thoughts about the Chairman: “I recently saw an interview with the Chairman, Kaizer Motaung. He’s a visionary. He’s not just a talker – the Chairman was able to turn his vision into reality.”
Then, he adds: “From my grandfather and father to myself – we all support Kaizer Chiefs. And it is not only because of the immense success they have had over the years, although that’s of course part of it.
“The biggest reason is the vision behind the club. That’s what has always attracted me to the Amakhosi. Look around here at the Village – these amazing facilities, the beautiful training grounds, the KC Retail shop…
“Let’s also not forget the development structures, which are based just across the road. Everything is together here, like one big family. We feel welcome here. That’s also why people speak about the Kaizer Family. It’s so fitting.”
Mpumi adds: “We will make sure that the Amakhosi fans in Mamelodi attend Saturday night’s match in great numbers. We all need to be there to support our team!”
