Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed the signing of the livewire striker Edward Manqele.
The 28-year-old arrives at the Village from Chippa United.
“We brought Edward on a three year deal,” Football Manager Bobby Motaung comments about the deal. “We wanted the player in 2012, but unfortunately his former club Free State Stars agreed terms for his transfer to Mamelodi Sundowns at the time. We are happy he is home now.”
“I am speechless,” responds Manqele after having penned the deal. “I am happy to be here and looking forward to make a contribution. Things didn’t work out at Sundowns. I was loaned to Moroka Swallows where I did well. I ended up signing for Chippa United. I am happy to be here and will give my best to the team. I worked with coach (Steve) Komphela before. I did wonders under him. The coach knows me very well and I am happy to be reunited with him. I was disappointed when I didn’t join Amakhosi earlier, but I told myself that one day I will play for Chiefs.”
Manqele played under coach Komphela at Free State Stars during the 2011/12 season. He reacted as follows about the new signing: “I think that, first of all, we have to compliment the Chiefs management. We are trying to present the best ever product for Amakhosi supporters, that’s also why we strengthened our striking position. Maybe Edward is here to dust the contract he was supposed to have with Chiefs back in 2012.”
Remarkably, Komphela saw Manqele as a trialist at Free State Stars: “I remember him coming for trials at Stars. I saw his goal scoring instinct from the onset, the rest is history.”
He netted 11 times in that 2011/2012.
Manqele will don jersey number 22. “I just hope to score goals and be a team player as well as help others in the team to score,” concludes a visibly excited striker.
