Steve Komphela had to make two changes to Chiefs’ starting line-up in comparison with the SuperSport United clash. Both came as a result of injuries to Erick Mathoho and Tsepo Masilela.
Daniel Cardoso partnered Lorenzo Gordinho in the centre of defence, while Sibusiso Khumalo came in at left-back.
Cape Town City entered this game on a high, as their win over Free State Stars in the weekend meant that The Citizens reached the final of the Telkom Knockout.
However, they soon got a wake-up call as Amakhosi had a brilliant start to the match, getting 1-0 up already in the third minute.
George Maluleka shot at goal, but the ball changed direction thanks Michelle Katsvairo’s touch. As a result of this, City’s goalkeeper went the wrong way and the ball flew past him in the back of the net. It was the Zimbabwean’s second league goal.
Chiefs continued to create chances, even though it didn’t result in any more goals in the first half.
George Maluleka had again an excellent game in midfield, while Edmore Chirambadare entertained the crowd with his dribbling.
City started to play better the longer the game went on, creating a few chances. But Itumeleng Khune was always alert in goal.
There was, however, a major set-back for the home side when Sibusiso Khumalo was sent off for a reckless tackle on Thamsanqa Mkhize in the 28th minute.
Still, Amakhosi continued to play well and, despite a man down, created a few goalscoring opportunities as well.
The score at half-time was 1-0.
