David Mathebula already a league winner and currently in his seventh year with the Glamour Boys has said in the latest issue of Amakhosi magazine that he has not given up on his hope to don the national team jersey.

“DVD” as the players is affectionately known from Kaizer Chiefs faithful has been used sparingly by coach Vladimir Vermezovic this season and a groin injury did not help his cause as he sat out of the last two games against Mamelodi Sundowns and Moroka Swallows.

“I want to play for my country, there can be no question about that. Playing for Bafana Bafana is every youngster’s dream and it is still one that I hope I can fulfill. It is up to me to put certain things in place and that will allow for the national team selectors to call me up.”

“Remember you have to be doing extra ordinary things at club level to play for your national team. Unlike at club level, where you are fighting with 30 guys in a squad, for a place in the national team you are up against 200 guys. If you are performing well for your club, then you will not be ignored,”

Mathebula also shared his memories about the Soweto derby against Orlando Pirates, “I will have to begin with 2005/06 Absa Cup final – they were all over us in the first half, but we rode out the storm and beat them on penalties, which was magnificent. Then the 2006/07 Derby which was the last game at the old Soccer City when Shaun Bartlett scored an injury time equalizer for us. Also, the second Derby of the 2007/08 season when we managed to beat Pirates and I scored the only goal of the game.”
