Towering defender, Eric Mathoho told kaizerchiefs.com that the win against Mamelodi Sundowns was the result of good ‘teamwork’, ‘team spirit’ and ‘working for one another’ in the team.
Playing alongside his homeboy, Tefo Mashamaite the no nonsense defender kept Sundowns strikers at bay. He was solid in the air and almost unbeatable on the ground.
“Credit to teamwork; we work for one another here, the team spirit is high and it shows in the way we approach our games. We realised the importance of us uniting as a team and this is starting to pay dividends,” he said after the game.
“The Technical Team spoke to us before the game. We knew that Sundowns have good players and are also good at set pieces. We needed to rectify the mistakes we committed when we played them in the first game. Despite the goal we conceded I think we did well, but we will keep on working hard to ensure that we improve on some areas of concern.”
“The communication at the back was also important. Itu (Itumeleng Khune) always communicates with his defence and also communication is good among all of us. Tefo came in and fitted well following Morgan Gould’s injury. Everyone is ready for any unplanned circumstances in the team to take over the baton and that is what Tefo did this evening.”
Mathoho who partnered Morgan Gould at Bafana Bafana level and at Club level, wished his teammate a speedy recovery; “Morgan is a big guy. I know that he is going to bounce back. I am sure we made him proud this evening by winning the game. I would like to join everyone associated with the Club to wish him a speedy recovery,”
