Mayo injured his toe prior to Saturday’s semifinal and opted to play through the pain as he lasted the duration of the mammoth 120 minutes that it took to complete the match.
Speaking after having his toe examined on Wednesday afternoon he said, “when I heard that my kids were in the stands nothing could have stopped me from playing against Sundowns. Every father wants to make his sons proud and it was time for me to stand up and be counted especially since my family was in the stands”.
Mayo was adamant that he would play against Sundowns and had to put in a big performance to repay a few debts. “The coach and my team mates have generally stuck with me through what could have been a tough season. Over the past few games I just felt that I was getting better and better,” he said.
Prior to his man of the match performance against Sundowns Mayo was on target a week before scoring as Chiefs defeated Silver Stars 2-1.
Patrick is expected to be back in training next week according to Kaizer Chiefs physiotherapist David Milner. He should be available for selection when the Amakhosi meet SuperSport United in their final game of the season on the 13th May.
There has been further good news for Chiefs on the injury front as defender Fabian McCarthy is showing good signs in overcoming a hamstring injury that forced him out of the semifinal against Sundowns.
McCarthy will also be ready in time for the final game of the season against SuperSport and the ABSA Cup final a week later against Orlando Pirates.
