Patrick Mayo’s ABSA Cup heroics were finally rewarded on Friday, when the man who played through the ABSA Cup Semi-Final against Mamelodi Sundowns with a broken toe and still picked up the ‘man of the match’ award, received the second part of his prize for being named the 2006 ABSA Cup player of the tournament.

In May, Mayo who was a group of five Chiefs personnel who collected individual honours in the ABSA Cup tournament two months ago, received a cash prizeR40 000 - with it he was meant to receive a 2.0 Litre Ford Focus SI. He finally drove off with it on Friday.

Patrick was invited by the ABSA Cup organizers to the Barloworld Armstrong car dealership in Alberton South Eastern Johannesburg at lunchtime on Friday to collect his brand new Vehicle.

A gleaming and truly ecstatic Mayo was handed the keys to his new car by Steward Mazola Group Marketing representative for ABSA Cup South Africa.

Mazola upon handing Mayo his car said “Patrick’s performances in the tournament were the kind of stuff you see in your DREAMS, he was an excellent contributor to his teams overall victory and he played with an injury in the semi final so this is a just reward for him”.

Mayo who could not contain his joy added, “I cannot explain to you how glad I am to have received this wonderful car. The ABSA Cup was a great tournament for us as a team and I hope that we can win it again next year”.

Patrick came along after not featuring in the early matches last season - he came into his own in the latter part of the season, becoming a regular feature in Ernst Middendorp’s game day eleven.

Mayo was pivotal in The Amakhosi’s overall ABSA Cup victory and along the way won two ‘man of the match’ awards; it all began when he helped Chiefs defeat his former club SuperSport United in the last 32 stages.

United were the defending Champions and Chiefs rolled out the defending by three goals to one and after victories over first division outfit PJ Stars and then Black Leopards, The Amakhosi set up a semi final meeting with Mamelodi Sundowns from which they emerged the victors via penalty kicks. Once again penalty kicks came to the fore as Chiefs defeated archrivals Orlando Pirates in the final also with the aide of the shoot out.

As he drove off into the blazing afternoon sun Mayo honked and dashed off. He is aware that he has set a standard for himself, which he is hoping to play up to as the new season approaches. Mayo has been pleased by his form in the pre season warm up games and is confident that his latest reward will help keep him playing at his best.
