Fabian McCarthy’s contract with Kaizer Chiefs finishes on Monday and he will be a free agent thereafter. The 31-year-old centre-back enjoyed a strong season for the Amakhosi, but was released on Friday after having a meeting with Chiefs Chairman Kaizer Motaung.

“I am a bit surprised that my contract was not renewed,” McCarthy reacts after his meeting at Naturena, “however, I thanked Mr. Motaung for the meeting and for all the advice he gave me during my six years at the Amakhosi. I will carry all those life lessons with me for the rest of my life.”

McCarthy also said goodbye to the technical staff and plans to say his farewells to the rest of the squad on Tuesday. The defender joined Chiefs in 2002 from Mamelodi Sundowns and made his premier league debut in 1997 for Bloemfontein Celtic.

“I am now officially a free agent,” continues McCarthy, “and looking for a club.” It was earlier this week speculated in the media that the defender would return to the Brazilians, but McCarthy stresses “I don’t know anything about that”. Other clubs that have shown interest in the defender are Bloemfontein Celtic, SuperSport United, Thanda Royal Zulu and Mpumalanga Black Aces.
