McCarthy’s Springbok backing

Amakhosi defender Fabian McCarthy is a true South African sports fan as he can often be found getting behind various South African national teams, whatever the sporting code maybe.

Earlier this year McCarthy was part of a Chiefs delegation who gave the South African Cricket team a send off prior to the ICC Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean.

A keen fan of various sports, McCarthy was also in attendance at a number of the ICC Pro 20 Cricket World Cup Matches, which was recently held in South Africa.

McCarthy will be swopping one Green and Gold jersey for another as he gets behind close friend Springbok wing Ashwin Willemse and the rest of the South African Rugby team for their IRB Rugby World Cup semifinal against Argentina.

The match will be played at the Stade De France in St Denis outside of Paris on Sunday evening; it is the same venue where Zinedine Zidane led the French Football team to FIFA World Cup glory in 1998.

Behind the Boks

With international matches on the go this weekend, it gives the Chiefs players not on national team duty the opportunity to relax at home with family and friends, and McCarthy intends to do just that on Sunday evening when the Boks tackle the Pumas.

An excited McCarthy who is a keen rugby fan, told kaizerchiefs.com that the Boks had his support saying, “I urge all the Chiefs fans and the country in general to get behind the guys as we would like them to be in next weeks final and hopefully they can do what they did in 1995 and win the World Cup for a second time”.

Willemse hope

It was a friendship that was borne out of personal tragedy as McCarthy spent months in the gym a few years ago working his way back to full fitness, he teamed up with Springbok winger Ashwin Willemse who himself was out of action for a long time through injury.

The pair forged a friendship and trained together through their rehabilitation process and have remained good friends since.

Fabian who was in contact with Ashwin on Friday, hopes that the tough and sturdy Willemse who has started in just one of the Springboks five games in France thus far gets a run out on Sunday.

McCarthy added “I sent him a message wishing him and the team well for the semi – final, I know just how passionate he is about representing his country and he gets extra motivation just putting on the Green and Gold jersey I know that if he plays at any time on Sunday he will make the nation proud”.

Khosi in the Bok ranks

There exist a special relationship between another member of the Springbok team and The Amakhosi, as Chiefs have a huge fan in many senses in the South African Rugby team in the form of Blue Bulls player Akona Ndungane.

Akona who has a twin brother Odwa who also is an accomplished rugby player has made his love for The Amakhosi an open secret and regularly attends Chiefs matches and was featured in the September issue of Amakhosi Magazine.

Akona has already tasted success on the international stage this year when his Bulls team won the Super 14 competition, against the Natal Sharks the team his brother Odwa plays for. Kaizerchiefs players, management and staff would like to wish Ndungane and the Springboks all the best for their up coming Rugby World Cup Semi – Final against Argentina and beyond that next weekends final.
