There will be reminisces of a proper Soweto Derby when the Reserve sides of Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates lock horns in the MultiChoice Diski Challenge festival taking place this weekend at Durban’s King Zwelithini Stadium.

Sparks are expected to fly when the two arch-rivals kick-off at 12:00 on Sunday, 14 February. Chiefs are fresh from a 2-0 win over Platinum Stars last weekend, while Pirates lost 1-0 to Jomo Cosmos.

Looking at the MDC log, Chiefs’ Reserves climbed up the ladder to sixth position with 18 points. Pirates’ Reserves, meanwhile, flirt with the bottom tier, having collected 13 points.

There are only two rounds of matches left for the MDC this season.

Kaizer Chiefs Head of Youth Development, Conti Kubheka reflects: “Our development programme has benefited immensely. The MDC is great. We have seen a gradual development progress and improvement. According to our curriculum the boys have grown in terms of competing and we are now heading for a stage where learning to win is crucial.”

The MDC festival in Durban will see other fixtures being played on Saturday, 13 February, when Bidvest Wits face Jomo Cosmos and current log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns will be up against Free State Stars. Raising the curtains on Valentine’s Day, 14 February, will be a clash between ‘neighbours’ Golden Arrows and Maritzburg United.

“We are amazed at the way the team understands the meaning of the Derby,” Kubheka comments. “I have listened to some of their conversations. That’s also what we expect from them as part of their learning process.”

Tickets are free and available at Computicket and Shoprite/Checkers outlets with a presentation of a valid South African ID. Tickets are limited to two per person.
