The Chiefs coach was confused as to what was on the offing, until he received a phone call from a journalist of a popular bi-weekly soccer magazine, who explained to him that they had been passed on information that he could soon be on his way out of Naturena.
Ernst then promptly logged onto various German soccer websites to find that he had been linked to a move to struggling 2nd Bundesliga or German second division team Eintracht Braunschweig.
The team, who hail from the Lower Saxony region of Germany just South of the town of Wolfsburg home to car manufacturer Volkswagen, are currently placed at the bottom of the eighteen-team second division. Braunschweig recently parted company with their coach Mikhail Kruger, this after the team's poor start to the season winning just one of their opening six games, losing the other five matches.
When asked about the fact that his name had been bandied about with nine other potential candidates to fill the vacant managers position at Braunschweig Ernst said, “I am just as surprised to hear about this as anyone else, the truth is that no one from that team has even contacted”.
He further added “even if they were to table an offer there is no way I would accept it, I have a contract to fulfil at Chiefs and at the moment my focus is on Sundowns next week. I do see myself staying in South Africa for the foreseeable future with Chiefs, there are many things I still need to achieve with Chiefs and reaching those objectives is all that is on my mind at the moment”.
Furthermore Ernst is confident that the 2006 – 2007 season will be a trophy-laden one for Chiefs which will hopefully earn him an extension to his current contract with The Amakhosi, which expires at the end of the season. He sees his mid to long-term future with The Amakhosi as he harbours a desire to lead Chiefs to success in the African Champions League once the club's ban from African Club Competitions comes to an end at the end of 2008.
