Motaung, who will have to sit out the game as he is still recovering from an ankle injury picked up on the 1st April, when he got onto the score sheet as Chiefs drew 1-1 with Moroka Swallows. As a result he had to miss The Amakhosi’s next game against Leopards, a game he would have missed anyway as he had collected his third yellow card of the season during the Swallows game. Motaung though is still upbeat about his chances of being able to catch up to and over take Chris Katongo’s tally of 15 goals.
Talking to kaizerchiefs.com on Wednesday Motaung, who has scored twelve goals in the league for Chiefs so far this season, believes that with a lot of hard work and help from his team mates, he will be able to over take the Zambian who left Cosmos for Denmark during the January transfer window.
He is hoping to return to action by the 28th April when Chiefs travel across town to face their arch rivals Orlando Pirates at the Ellis Park Stadium for the first time since 2001. Motaung has set his sights on scoring four or more goals in Chiefs' final three games of the season.
When asked whether having to sit out Sunday’s game will build more pressure on him in his quest towards overtaking Katongo, a confident Motaung said: “The fact that I cannot go to Port Elizabeth for the Santos game now means that I need to be focused on scoring just over a goal a game in our remaining three games. I do feel that with the end of the season near and the fact that I am within touching distance of Katongo’s goal tally, has spurred me on and made me more determined then ever to get the goals that will ensure that Chiefs have something to show for at the PSL awards ceremony at the end of the season.”
He does though understand the scale of the task in front of him and finding the goals won’t come easy, as he explained “With games against teams like Orlando Pirates and Maritzburg United, who need every point to avoid relegation, and Silver Stars, I am aware that it will require something special to get a half a dozen or so goals against these very determined and capable defences. Like I said before, I am up to the challenge and the real thing is for me to have the self belief that together with my team mates I will be able to get the goals. Having something to still fight for will add some spice to these games for me and the guys. I have set myself a target and the challenge is for me to see if I can reach my goals”.
The 25-year-old striker, who has played more games for Chiefs this season than in his previous five seasons at The Amakhosi, is more worried about being able to get the opportunity to chase down Katongo than in finding the back if the net.
“Being out injured, you're always concerned that another guy can come in and seize the moment. More than anything else, I am just concentrating on being at in the best shape physically by next week and praying to be given an opportunity to play in those last three games. Should I get to play in those games then what needs to be achieved thereafter will fall into place, getting onto the field is the first step to finding the back of the net”.
While Kaizer Junior will probably have one eye on next weekend’s game against Orlando Pirates, his teammates will be well focused on returning from Port Elizabeth with three points in the bag. A sound performance against the Peoples team rounded off with a win will provide Chiefs with a major boost when they begin their preparations for next weekend’s derby.
The right result in Sunday’s game, which kicks off at 15h15 at the Eastern Province rugby stadium in Port Elizabeth, will provide Chiefs with the right tonic to help lift them against Pirates, which could well lift Kaizer Motaung Juniors goal tally for the season.
