Goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune was named by the panel of Judges as the best keeper of the competition, while Captain Jimmy Tau who marshalled a Chiefs defence that went through 360 minutes of play without conceding a goal as the club marched through to its 13th triumph since 1982 in this competition.
Was named the defender of the tournament in addition Reneilwe Letsholonyane and Knowledge Musona were winners in the midfielder and striker of the tournament categories.
Tau’s central defensive partner Thomas Sweswe praised the captain for his contribution throughout the competition saying “Jimmy had a great tournament; he was a fantastic leader his work rate was phenomenal he helped out in attack and defence and is a deserved winner of this prize.”
Tau himself praised his coach and teammates for their contributions in the team’s Cup success, as the Chiefs skipper said “thanks must go to the ALL MIGHTY for giving us the strength to win this competition.
The team did very well and also the fans played a massive part in our victory, prior to every game seeing the number of people who had turned up to support us was the inspiration behind our win.”
Reneilwe Letsholonyane was able to get the nomination as midfielder of the tournament ahead of Orlando Pirates duo of Andile Jali and Daine Klate, Letsholonyane who scored for Chiefs during their first game of the Cup during a 2-0 win over Amazulu.
Without any player scoring a minimum of five goals during the competition it was decided that a special Striker’s recognition award would be handed out instead, Chiefs joint top goal – scorer in the tournament Knowledge Musona saw off the competition of Chiefs’ two goal Cup final hero Sthembiso Ngcobo as well as Ezenwa Otorogu to win the prize.
Musona is hoping to use the victory in Telkom Knockout Cup as a motivation to push him on to help Chiefs win more silverware in the coming months as he explained saying.
“I am extremely happy that firstly we had been able to retain the Cup and winning an individual award is a testament to the entire team and the way we played. My teammates helped me play the way I did, we cannot stop now and we need to carry on from here and hopefully we can win more awards and trophies.”
The coveted Player of the tournament award winner will only be made Public at the end of the season, when the league hosts its annual Awards Ceremony.
