Musona strike as Chiefs brush Celtic aside

MTN8 Quarter Final

Venue: Rand Stadium, Johannesburg

Date: Saturday, 21 August 2010

Kick off: 20:15

Kaizer Chiefs 1 (Musona 23)

Bloemfontein Celtic 0

Caution: Nthethe, Isaacs

Sensation, Knowledge Musona proved that last season was not a fluke as his first half beauty handed the Glamour Boys a 1-0 win against Bloemfontein Celtic at Rand Stadium on a cold Saturday night.

The Glamour Boys looked lively from the first whistle with both wingers, Abia Nale and Mandla Masango coming close opening the scoring inside 10 minutes.

Siphiwe Tshabalala handed the captain’s armband and a free role behind Musona should have grabbed an opener for the Glamour Boys after brilliantly playing a one-two with Mthokozisi Yende but goalkeeper, Thabani Stemmer did well to thwart the danger producing a superb save to deny the Bafana Bafana star, 0-0 after 20 minutes.

Three minutes later in what looked like a one way traffic, Knowledge Musona took over from where he left off last May scoring a winner on the same ground against SuperSport United. This time the “Smiling Assassin” smashed in a free kick from 25 yards out, 1-0 to Chiefs.

Celtic should have levelled matters in the 35th minute as Dennis Kalala who did well to beat Punch Masenamela shot just wide, 1-0 to the Glamour Boys at halftime.

The second stanza of the game did not produce much action as the hosts took their foot off the paddle allowing Bloemfontein Celtic to press forward for an equaliser. However, desperate shooting from the likes of Prince Olomu did not trouble Itumeleng Khune who had a quite night thanks to Man of the Match, Valery Nahayo and his partner Dominic Isaacs.

Vladimir Vermezovic was forced to make three changes in the second half with first Siphiwe Tshabalala, Abia Nale and Tlou Molekwane making way due to slight injuries. Josta Dladla, Sthembiso Ngcobo making his debut for the Club and Jimmy Tau replaced the injured trio respectively.

The coach confirmed in the post match interview that the injuries to the trio is nothing serious and they all should be ready for the next game.

Kaizer Chiefs join Ajax Cape Town and Moroka Swallows (a winner is expected between Orlando Pirates and Santos on Sunday afternoon) on the hat for the semi finals and the draw will take place on Monday, 23 August 2010 in Johannesburg.
