“We are happy to start with the league fixtures,” Steve Komphela comments. “We have gone through the preparations and all we need is a good start.”

Amakhosi arrived in the City of Roses, Bloemfontein yesterday afternoon, ahead of their first match of the 2017/2018 Absa Premiership season against Bloemfontein Celtic on Sunday.

“The first few games are always a bit tricky, as most teams still read like a closed book,” the Kaizer Chiefs coach adds. “We have done our homework and we gathered intelligence about Celtic, albeit limited because they haven't been exposed that much in competitive encounters.”

“As for us, we are coming back from an unfortunate defeat in the knockout competition last weekend,” Komphela reflected on the MTN8 quarterfinal. “We played well against SuperSport United, but luck wasn’t on our side in terms of goals. We returned to the training ground to work hard and be prepared for Celtic.”

“Our plan is simple,” the Amakhosi mentor added about this season’s target. “We want to lift the trophy at the end of the league marathon.”

On the selection front, Komphela commented: “We will play our best possible side. The competition for places is at an all-time high at the moment. We have a few players with the national team, but the best eleven will start on Sunday afternoon.”

Chiefs start the league program without Teenage Hadebe, Emmanuel Letlotlo and Ryan Moon, who are all recovering from an assortment of injuries.

“The energy in the camp is gratifying,” concluded Komphela. “We want to display good football and take away the three points.”

The match takes place at Bloemfontein’s Free State Stadium. Kick-off is at 15:00.
