Chiefs have won their last two games defeating Soweto rivals Moroka Swallows in their last league encounter around ten days ago, they followed that victory up with a win over Amazulu in the last 16 stage of the Telkom Knockout Cup.
Currently, the Amakhosi are third on the league standings, a point adrift of league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.
SuperSport United were victorious last weekend, winning their Telkom Knockout game against Vasco da Gama. Their league form so far this season has seen them lose two games, draw one and win two. That was not the kind of start the defending champions would have liked. They drew 1-1 with Ajax Cape Town when they were last in league action on October 20.
Chiefs are aware of that and will be aiming to change the fact that SuperSport have dominated games between the teams since the turn of the century (1999/2000 season). In the 22 meetings between the sides, Chiefs have managed to win just three games.
Chiefs will take heart from the fact that they recently managed to overturn winless streaks against Moroka Swallows and also triumphed in a personal battle with Amazulu coach Manqoba Mngqithi.
The Amakhosi’s 1-0 victory over Moroka Swallows in an Absa Premiership match on October 20 was their first against the Birds since April 2008, while their Cup triumph last week over Amazulu was Chiefs' first win in a cup game against a side coached by Manqoba Mngqithi.
Having recently turned the stats book on those opponents, Chiefs will be confident of recording a league win against United for the first time since the 2008/2009 season. Victory could see Chiefs assume first place on the league standings come Sunday evening, if results elsewhere end favourably for the Amakhosi.
Chiefs go into the game minus the midfield duo of Siphiwe Tshabalala, who is still recovering from a hip injury, and Reneilwe Letsholonyane, who scored during the win over Amazulu but will sit out Sunday’s game as he has to serve a mandatory one-match suspension for collecting his third yellow card of the campaign against Usuthu.
Defender Dominic Isaacs is once again available for selection. He missed the game in Durban against Amazulu through suspension. Defender Thomas Sweswe is unavailable for the match, as he has returned to Zimbabwe to attend the funeral service of his brother Qinisela, who passed away earlier in the week.
Kick-off for the game is at 15:30.
