The Chiefs coach has no doubts that The Amakhosi will be part of the August 5th spectacular at FNB Stadium and will give away no quarter in going all out to bring home what would be their first recognized piece of silverware for the new season. In his first Telkom Charity Cup outing as a novice to South African Soccer Ernst Middendorp saw his charges lose to Bloemfontein Celtic, which saw Chiefs making an early exit from the Cup.
This time around the coach believes his team will be better prepared Middendorp added “last season our general pre season campaign did not begin early, this season we are much better prepared and before the season starts we want to have three trophies in the bag”.
By this the Chiefs coach means that he expects nothing less than victory in the three pre season tournaments which The Amakhosi will be involved in, Chiefs pre season travels will see them in action in Polokwane, Rustenburg, Cape Town, Tshwane and eventually Johannesburg.
Gaining the upper hand psychologically early on over the opposition is of paramount importance to the Chiefs coach, if the Amakhosi are to win their third PSL title “we need to win these events, it will put us in a positive frame of mind when the season gets underway”.
Getting into the Telkom Charity Cup according to Ernst should not be a problem and winning it is a tough prospect but Chiefs are ready for the challenge. As he adds “having to play two matches in a day is something strange but being able to put out one team in the morning and another in the afternoon and win will send out warning signals that we are ready for whatever is going to be thrown our way”.
Chiefs last won the Telkom Charity cup in 2003 when they defeated Dynamos 3-1 in their first game and than ran away 1-0 victors over Mamelodi Sundowns thanks to a John Shoes Moshoeu goal late in the game.
After two days of voting the countries top three teams supporters have spoken loudest in paving the way for their teams to remain at the top of the polls when the voting closes on the 30th July, and set up what will be a spectacular to be hold.
