Classic triumphed over Ajax Cape Town on penalties away from after the match ended 1-1, during their ABSA Cup last 16 game thanks to a well taken Collen Zimba goal Classic they were able to force a penalty shoot out where they eventually triumphed. To set up a quarterfinal date with another Cape Town side and inaugural winners of the ABSA Cup Santos.
Since Chiefs and Classics clashed for the first time almost seven seasons ago in November 1999, five of the seven previous meetings have ended in draws with Chiefs winning the other two games. This statistic played itself out again when the two clubs met earlier this season the match ended 0-0, this game was played four days after Chiefs had beaten Classic in a Coca Cola Cup first round tie.
The inaugural game between the two teams took place back in November 1999 and Chiefs won that game with a resounding 4-0 scoreline. Siyabonga Nomvete was amongst the goal scorers that afternoon at the Johannesburg Stadium, with midfielders Thabo Mooki and Patrick Mbuthu also added their names to the score sheet. Chiefs could have added to their tally. Thabang Lebese missed a penalty late on in the game and strangely enough was immediately substituted by coach Muhsin Ertugral.
For Chiefs, Sunday’s game is a must win in order to keep up the pressure on title contenders Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates. With Chiefs rivals having games in hand The Amakhosi will be looking for the full compliment of points.
Although Classic have had a good run in the ABSA Cup, their league form has not been what their multi million rand investors would have expected it to be. They recently parted company with coach Trott Moloto after he failed to deliver the desired results. The shake-up in the technical department was complimented by the bolstering of the playing squad with the addition of former Orlando Pirates midfield maestro Steve Lekoelea.
Classic are currently second from bottom on the PSL table and this is a game that Chiefs should be able to take three points from, with the return of various players from injury and suspensions the Amakhosi will fancy their chances.
Defenders Fabian McCarthy and Jimmy Tau make a welcome return to add steel to the Chiefs defence, Gert Schalkwyk looks set to be fit for the game, his midfield partner David Mathebula will not be making the trip to Durban. Mathebula is still away at his family home in the Limpopo Province attending the funeral of his later mother who recently passed away.
