No room for error - Komphela

“There are very few mistakes you can commit in the MTN8,” enthuses Steve Komphela ahead of tonight’s quarterfinal against Cape Town City. “In league matches you have a bit of room for error - there are thirty matches to play and a mixed bag of sixteen teams competing.”

Speaking at a MTN8 Cup press conference in Cape Town Stadium on Thursday afternoon, Komphela said: “One thing you know about MTN8 is that it is Wafa Wafa, which means that there is no second chance. It calls for maximum effort. I know City from their Mpumalanga Black Aces days, they are not new boys. And the club is run by football people.”

Chiefs are in the Mother City to face Cape Town City for a MTN8 quarterfinal match at Cape Town Stadium on Friday evening, 26 September (kick-off is at 20:00).

“We have seen a little bit of who they are," Komphela adds, having watched the tape of City beating Polokwane City in their season’s opening match. “We are just anxious to get on, rectifying the mistakes we committed on Tuesday against Bidvest Wits.”

Komphela confirmed the status of injuries in his team, with Eric’ ‘Tower’ Mathoho, Keagan Buchanan and Siphiwe Tshabalala all out as a result of injury, while Cameldine Abraw will probably miss most of the upcoming season, having recently had a knee operation.

With the spotlight on the absence of 'Tower', Komphela says, "It is always sad to lose a player of his strength and capabilities. However, this is an opportunity for other centre-backs to show face, like ‘Rama’ Mphahlele, Lorenzo Gordinho and Siyanda Xulu. Mainly, you look for consistency in that crucial defensive role.”

“We gave Wits too much time on the ball,” reflects Komphela again on the 2-1 loss to Bidvest Wits on Tuesday. “But will do better against City.”
