No talk of the final yet
No talk of the final yet

We had a relatively quiet week last week, as we emerged victorious from our ABSA Cup semi final against Mamelodi Sundowns. We used the opportunity to get back our spirit, and later in the week we began to prepare for our last league game of the season.

Once our match against SuperSport is out of the way, we will begin to think about the final on everyone’s mind and that is our last remaining ABSA Cup game against Orlando Pirates.

First we need to conquer SuperSport and try and pull our way up into the second spot in the league as we are still trying to finish the season in second spot. If we are able to finish the season second and win the ABSA Cup, then we would have had a relatively successful season and will be looking to improve on it and go one better next season.

Our opponents this weekend SuperSport United have not had a great run of things recently, but I am sure they will be looking for their first victory in five games when they face us. They are still able to qualify for the SAA Supa 8, and victory over us will see them leapfrog Jomo Cosmos into eight place and take up their place in the Supa 8 competition.

Our preparations for our remaining matches have been slightly hampered - firstly by the injury to Gert Schalkwyk and we are still unsure as to what the length of his absence will be. We are still hopeful of having him ready for the ABSA Cup final.

In truth that is really a long shot and more than anything that is just hoping for some good fortune. Fabian McCarthy and Patrick Mayo should return some time this week to full training and we will try and see if we can give them some game time this weekend - with these two important games we will obviously be looking to put out our best eleven.

Furthermore I had a busy Saturday, firstly we had training in the morning and thereafter I attended a couple of matches. I then had an interview with Docky Docrat and former Kaizer Chiefs coach Eddie Lewis on talk radio 702. We had an interesting discussion and some valuable points were raised, one of which was the establishment of a reserve league in South Africa.

I do feel that in order to blood more younger players into the league and ensure that they are able to cope better in their first seasons we need to establish such a league. It will do wonders for our soccer as well as giving younger players the opportunity to play with fringe players from PSL teams, and also players who are coming back from injury can use this set up to get back to full match fitness. I am really for such a league and will support its establishment 100%. We will wait and see if anything comes out of such discussions and see if a reserve league does get set up.

My condolences also to Arthur Zwane on the passing away of his grandmother Josephina Zwane, and to the family, friends and various supporters of Kaizer Chiefs legend ‘Ace’ Ntsolengoe who passed away this morning.

I never really had the opportunity to watch him, but I have heard a lot about what he was like as a player and when I met former Chiefs coach Eddie Lewis this past weekend he did mention to me that Ace was probably the best footballer he has ever worked with.
