The organizers of Tuesday morning's prize giving function had to bring the ceremony forward in order to accommodate The Amakhosi, as Chiefs will be heading straight from the function to the airport and off to Durban. Where for the fourth consecutive league game they will be at the ABSA Stadium, this time around The Amakhosi will be taking on Clive Barkers Amazulu.
Ertugral well pleased with his teams efforts over the weekend which saw Chiefs lift their 10th domestic cup crown since 1996, does not want Amazulu to be the perennial Banana Peel which will cause The Amakhosi to slip on after a magnificent cup win. Having come through a tough campaign in the Telkom Cup, Ertugral is certain that the efforts put in by his team in lifting the R4.25 million prize money can be duplicated in the league and bring similar rewards. It is a 17 day period where Chiefs play five games until the PSL breaks at the end of the month, and resumes only in February after the African Cup of Nations. Chiefs aim would be to try and end of December inside the top three and the best way to do that would be to start off with a win on Wednesday against the Usuthu.
The History
From the early days when Chiefs began playing in a national league they used to come up against The Usuthu, in terms of the teams clashes since 1996 when the PSL came into being it has been Chiefs who have by far been the dominant force in matches between the two teams. In the fourteen matches contested between the teams Amazulu have only ever won three of them but the impact of those defeats have had huge ramifications, during the 1998 – 1999 season.
The Usuthu who were at the bottom end of the table managed to defeat title chasing Kaizer Chiefs at home, it was a defeat which in the end cost the Amakhosi the Championship that season. As a draw would have sufficed and would have lifted Chiefs above Sundowns on the table at the end of the season, in the end it was Chiefs inability to get a point against Amazulu that helped Sundowns claim the title on goal difference. Even though Chiefs won their remaining seven games after that game the March 1999 defeat fundamentally cost Chiefs the 1998 – 1999 PSL title.
The last meeting between the two teams at Olympia Park Stadium in Rustenburg on the 3rd March, saw Amazulu record one of their three victories over Chiefs. Amazulu’s 2-1 victory over Chiefs also sounded the death knell for Ernst Middendorp, as Chiefs parted company with the German coach two days later. In this corresponding fixture last season played almost a year ago, saw Chiefs triumph 2-0 at the Chatsworth Stadium. With Chiefs scoring two or more goals in nine of the 14 meetings between the teams, one would put their money on a fired up Chiefs team brining home all three points.
Look out for
On Chiefs end of the park the player who has grabbed all the headlines recently goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, will once again hold the key for Chiefs at the back. The young keeper had a weekend to remember as he was firstly included in the Bafana Bafana team for the Africa Cup of nations. Next he was at the centre of Chiefs victorious Telkom Cup Final win over Sundowns saving three of the Brazilians five spot kicks, on Monday he was voted as the jet rookie of the month for November.
Derrick Spencer played his first game of the season during Saturday’s final, and got the vote as the man of the match it was a big surprise for the player but probably less so for those watching. As Spencer impressed and added both strength and stability to the Chiefs rear guard, he looked competent dealing with Peter Ndlovu and Lerato Chabangu. He will be out to show that he is not a one game wonder, a similar performance will ensure that he keeps his place in the starting eleven.
John "Shoes" Moshoeu once scored a hat trick against Amazulu when he was a Chiefs player, that was back in the 2003 – 2004 season when Chiefs managed to score four goals against Amazulu in both the home and away games that they played against the Usuthu. Moshoeu who won two league titles with Chiefs is now donning the green of Amazulu and will be looking to get a goal against The Amakhosi, also pivotal to Clive Barkers plans for a win will be Abbas Issah. The hard working Ghanaian who could be on his way to the Beijing Olympics, has knuckled down this season and done most of the hard work for his team, which has kept them for most of the time in the top end of the table.
