Kaizer Chiefs will host North Africans Raja Casablanca at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday (kick-off at 19:00). The Moroccans have already won the CAF Champions League three times and will be tough opponents.
“We appeal to our supporters to come out in big numbers,” Kaizer Chiefs Marketing Director Jessica Motaung stresses.
This will be a scintillating clash.
The Moroccans are at present in fifth position in the Botola Pro League. However, they beat second placed Olympique Khouribga 1-0 on Saturday. Raja will play another game tonight, facing eighth positioned Hassania Agadir before travelling to South Africa.
Together with Congolese side TP Mazembe, Raja is the only African team to have reached the final of the World Cup for Clubs. However, the Moroccans lost the 2013 final with 2-0 to German giants Bayern Munich.
Amakhosi have yet to reach the group stage of the African Champions League, but coach Stuart Baxter is adamant that this year will be different.
The Moroccans won the Champions League in 1989, 1997 and 1999. However, Raja hasn’t reached the semifinals since 2005.
They have won eleven times the Moroccan League, the last title coming in 2013. Last season, Raja finished in second position.
The club is coached by the Portuguese José Romão, who used to be a defender in playing days.
“I hope that especially our supporters in KwaZulu-Natal will get behind our team,” says Motaung. “To show our visitors what it means to be Amakhosi 4 Life.”
Tickets are available at Computickets and will cost R50.
