Siphelele Ntshangase joined Kaizer Chiefs during the recent transfer window. Saturday awaits the game against Orlando Pirates, it will be his first since donning the Gold and Black jersey. “I can’t wait to be part of the Soweto Derby.”
The midfielder has started in two matches since becoming a Glamour Boy, coming on in another five. He hasn’t lost as yet a match with Chiefs, with the side being on a ten-game unbeaten run since early December. Amakhosi won both matches in which he started - the 3-0 win over Golden Arrows (Nedbank Cup Last 16) and the 1-0 win over Cape Town City (Absa Premiership).
He admits, however, that adapting to life at the Village hasn’t been easy. “I am used to the way Chiefs play,” the 24-year-comments, “that’s not the problem. But I have been struggling a bit with consistency. That’s mainly because Chiefs are such a big club which comes with huge responsibilities.”
Ntshangase fondly talks about the time when still a kid and watching Chiefs play in Soweto Derbies. He especially loved the side with the likes of Jabu Pule (Mahlangu), Brian Baloyi, Patrick Mabedi, Stanton Fredericks and Thabo Mooki. “I loved the way they played,” the midfielder explains his love for Amakhosi from a young age, “that really got to me and that’s when I knew that I wanted to be part of a Soweto Derby one day.”
Chiefs have won 67 Derbies out of the 162 played since 1970. Pirates have only won 38, while 52 games ended in a draw. Five matches were abandoned due to a variety of reasons. Amakhosi scored 209 goals, while conceding 169.
Saturday’s Soweto Derby will be Pirates’ home game and will be played at FNB Stadium (kick-off is at 15:30).
“I will make the most of the chance if given,” Ntshangase concludes. “I will go beyond just doing my job.”
