Obua off to face Niger

David Obua will depart from Johannesburg at midnight on Thursday to join his team mates who are currently in camp in the Ugandan capital of Kampala as they prepare for their final MTN CAF African Cup of Nations qualifier against Niger on Sunday.

A win over Niger could help the Cranes snap up one of three spots open to the best placed runners up in the twelve qualifying groups.

Obua who has been out of action with a thigh injury since the June 2nd when Uganda recorded a shock 2-1 win over Nigeria, will be aiming to make a successful return from his three month lay off.

As a result of the injury that Obua picked up in June, he was unable to play in any part in Chiefs pre-season preparations as he worked his way back to full fitness. He also missed out on playing Chiefs opening three league matches of the current season and is yet to make an appearance for The Amakhosi in the 2007-08 season.

A good showing by Obua against Niger will help boost his chances of featuring for Chiefs in their next league fixture on the 16th September, when they travel to Attridgeville to face SuperSport United.

Nations Cup hopes

Obua is determined to put up a good showing against Niger and although he is aware that playing in a competitive game after a more than three month absence will not be easy, he feels that the opportunity to represent his country who have an outside chance of qualifying for the tournament in Ghana in early January next year will bring out the best in him.

As Obua added “I know that I have been kind of out of things for a couple of months, playing against Niger will allow me to get my match sharpness back as well as help me to find some sort of form again”.

Of overall importance to Obua though is trying to win the game and guide the Ugandans into the nations cup “it has been a long time since Uganda last qualified for the nations cup and we are on the verge of making to Ghana. So we cannot let this opportunity slip from our grasp at this late stage, we need to make certain of qualification with a big win this weekend”.

Incorrect report

Chiefs team manager Bobby Motaung made reference to an article that appeared on Thursday morning on a football website stating that The Amakhosi were not going to allow Obua to fly off to join the Cranes for Sunday’s game, “it was brought to our attention that there was a claim in the media that we were preventing David from going to play for Uganda. These kinds of reports are disturbing because firstly it is completely false and further more no one phoned us to check if whether this was true or not, the reality of the situation is that we will not prevent any player from honoring a national team call up and David will represent his country on Sunday as he is scheduled to fly out of South Africa on Thursday evening”.
